Collaboration
with the Chester-Ridley-Crum Watersheds
Association
The
Chester-Ridley-Crum
Watersheds Association (CRC) is
a non-profit organization devoted
to the protection of the water resources
of the Chester, Ridley, and Crum Creek
Valleys in both Chester and Delaware
County. Rather than pursue DMTU's
efforts to improve the fly stretch
on Ridley Creek independently, we
feel is it beneficial to both our
chapter and the CRC for us to work
in cooperation with one another. Initially
our efforts will focus on our adopted
section of Ridley Creek - the 'fly
stretch'/special regulations area
between Sycamore Mills dam and Dismal
Run, but future projects may involve
other sections of the creek and/or
other creeks.
The
CRC has already begun a multi-year
project to eradicate the invasive
Japanese knotweed which is choking
much of the land adjacent to the fly
stretch. In 2006 the CRC obtained
funding and permission to spray sections
on both sides of the creek below the
bridge (roughly from the 'lower parking
lot' to the mud hole. Additional spraying
is already planned and approved for
the this year. Because it takes several
years of spraying to control a heavy
infestation, spraying will continue
next year and thereafter as needed.
The ultimate goal of the project is
to eliminate the knot weed in along
the fly stretch all the way down to
Dismal Run.
